MIDEM 2017 Impressions

MIDEM took place from June 5th until the 9th, where Peter Fosso (Music2Deal USA), Kathy Hahn (Music2Deal Canada), and I joined this great event.

I have attended MIDEM maybe 15 – 20 times but they were always during the Winter. This was the first when I was in Cannes in the summer season. To be honest, it is really worth it to be there: First of all, because of the business and second, it´s really nice to enjoy the lovely weather and the nice location – and great talking with people at the beach or at one of the “MIDEM by Night” events outside.

It was a very relaxing atmosphere at MIDEM with nice and interesting people. The new MIDEM staff did a really good job – very polite and helpful, good organisation, with a lot of extra services like free breakfast, drinks & food. MIDEM offers a lot of beautiful places inside the Palais to meet with people. This year it was in a different section of the building, which I hadn’t been in before. The main area at my first MIDEMs were in the basement of the MIDEM without daily light.

The MIDEM 2017 was not only a very nice event but it was also successful for Music2Deal. I had about 50 meetings and everybody liked the idea of Music2Deal, especially since it keeps you informed about music offers and requests from your business friends, which is not provided by LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

I am pleased to post news about new partnerships very soon!

Who’s Leading The Streaming Pack?

Good snapshot. (Y)

Mark Mulligan's avatarMusic Industry Blog

At MIDiA Research we are currently in the final stages of producing the update to our annual landmark report: The State Of The Streaming Nation, a report which compiles every streaming market data point you could possibly need.

In advance of its release in June we want to give you a sneak peak into a couple of the key areas of focus: streaming app usage and major label streaming revenue.

music apps slide

Subscriber numbers only tell part of the streaming story. They are solid indicators of commercial success, but can often obscure how well a service is doing in terms of engaging its user base. That’s why we track the main music services’ active user bases every quarter. But rather than tracking Monthly Active Users (MAUs), we track Weekly Active Users (WAUs). The MAU metric is past its sell by date. In today’s always on, increasingly mobile digital landscape, doing something just…

MIDEM ARTIST ACCELERATOR 2017 UNVEILS FINALISTS

EXCITING LINE-UP OF RISING INTERNATIONAL TALENT

MIDEM ARTIST ACCELERATOR 2017

Midem today announces the 11 finalists in the Midem Artist Accelerator (MAA), the only international career booster for emerging musical talent. Midem, the global music industry event, takes place in Cannes, France, from 6-9 June 2017.

Now in its third year, the MAA is enjoying growing success, with more than 600 submissions representing some 67 nationalities. Chosen by the MAA Artistic Committee, the 11 finalists will perform live on the Midem by Night main stage set up on the beach of the Majestic Palace and will benefit from a 360-degree development programme during the tradeshow. The artists will also compete in a Midem online community vote, where the winners will play at Midem’s Opening Party on Tuesday 6 June.

Global superstar Wyclef Jean as well as Latin superstar Daddy Yankee are the 2017 Ambassadors of the MAA. Both will hold exclusive conversations with the finalists, during which they will set out their vision of musical success and share their expertise.

“I’m excited about the MAA programme because I have spent my entire career producing, writing for, and collaborating with amazing young artists. The youth are the future. It’s a blessing to help mould the musicians of tomorrow,” said Jean.

“I’m thrilled to be at Midem for the first time and honoured to be invited as MAA Ambassador and member of the 2017 Artistic Committee. I’m ready to share my knowledge of more than 20 years in the music business with the Midem audience and these rising stars,” said Daddy Yankee.

To mark the release of his seventh studio album “Carnival lll,” (June 23, Heads Music), Wyclef Jean, leader of the iconic hip-hop group the Fugees, will also perform on Wednesday 7 June on the Midem by Night main stage.

The 11 finalists come from all over the world and are: ACID ARAB (France), electronic arab; ADIAN COKER (UK), R’n’B/hip-hop/urban; BE CHARLOTTE (UK), pop; GEOFFROY (Canada), electronic pop; IRIS GOLD (Denmark), R’n’B/hip-hop/urban; KIDDY SMILE (France), electronic dance music; M.ANIFEST (Ghana), R’n’B/hip-hop/urban; PRATEEK KUHAD (India), pop; SHAKKA (UK), R’n’B/hip-hop/urban; RENDEZ-VOUS (France), rock/alternative; and XXX (South Korea), R’n’B/hip-hop/urban.

All finalists will perform live during the exciting Midem by Night concerts held over three evenings, and will benefit from a tailored programme during the tradeshow, including coaching sessions and unique networking opportunities.

The artists will also receive exclusive mentoring sessions with the industry experts making up the MAA Artistic Committee, which includes: Christian Bernhardt, Agent at United Talent Agency (USA); Willy Ehmann, SVP Domestic GSA of Sony Music Entertainment (Germany); Rob Hallett, Founder of Robomagic (UK); Christopher Kaskie, President of Pitchfork (USA); Yoon-Young Kong (Dalse), Founder and Executive Producer of Zandari Culture Company (South Korea); Patrik Larsson, A&R and Label Manager at Playground Music Scandinavia (Sweden); Laurence Muller, Founder and Managing Director of Snoot (France); Devraj Sanyal, MD and CEO at Universal Music South Asia (India); and Renneth Tshisikule, Founder and Director of The Independent Music Exporters (South Africa).

The finalists will also benefit from a pool of experts to assist them during their career journey at Midem. Among the mentoring services offered, the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers will deliver free legal consulting, while Metropolis lead studio engineer Liam Nolan, a twotime Grammy winner for Record Of The Year (“Hello” by Adele) and Album Of The Year (“25” by Adele), will run a session on musical production. In addition to the finalists enjoying privileged access to the Global Sync and Brands Summit, Rupert Hollier, Creative Director of Metropolis, Europe’s leading independent professional recording studio, will conduct a dedicated workshop around music sync and placements. And the Midem Artist Accelerator “Coup de Coeur” will win the chance to master an album at Metropolis’s production facility based in London.
